How to Launch on Product Hunt Without an Audience

LaunchGP · · 5 min read

To launch on Product Hunt, schedule your launch for 12:01 a.m. Pacific Time, when the daily leaderboard resets, and have the page ready before then: a clear tagline, real screenshots, a short demo and a first comment from you. On the day, tell the people who would use the product that you’re live, answer every comment, and email new signups the next day.

Without an audience, aim for feedback and a few real users rather than the top spot, because teams with big followings usually take the first places.

We run LaunchGP, a weekly launch race, so we have a stake in where you launch. This guide covers Product Hunt on its own terms. Product Hunt changes its rules, so check its help center before your launch.

How does a Product Hunt launch work?

  • One day, one board. Products launched that day compete on the same leaderboard. The board resets the next day.
  • Votes and comments move you up. The order comes from upvotes and activity, weighted by Product Hunt’s own ranking.
  • Not every launch is featured. Product Hunt picks which launches appear on the homepage. A launch that isn’t featured is much harder to find.
  • You can schedule it. You set the launch date ahead and prepare the page in advance.

What should you prepare before launch day?

What Why it matters
A one-line tagline It’s the line people read on the board. Say what the product does. How to write a tagline
Gallery images Show the real product. The first image does most of the work
A short video or demo People decide in seconds whether to try it
The maker’s first comment Who you are, why you built it, what you want feedback on
A way to try it now A free plan, a trial or a demo. A waitlist gets fewer votes
A list of people to tell Users, beta testers, people who asked about it

Write the launch copy once and adapt it for each place. How to write a launch post people actually read walks through it.

What time should you launch on Product Hunt?

Most makers go live at 12:01 a.m. Pacific Time, because a later start loses hours of a 24-hour race. That means your launch day starts in the middle of the night for most of Europe and Asia, so plan who answers comments while you sleep.

Which day is a trade-off: midweek days get more traffic and more competition, weekends get less of both. Best day to launch a product compares the options.

How do you get support without breaking the rules?

Product Hunt’s community rules discourage asking for upvotes directly, and votes from new or coordinated accounts can be filtered out. What works:

  1. Tell people you’re live and ask for feedback. A short, personal message, not a mass “please upvote”.
  2. Send it in waves. Your closest users first, then your list, then your social posts later in the day.
  3. Answer every comment. Fast, specific answers keep the page active and win over strangers.
  4. Never buy votes or use extra accounts. It’s against the rules and it can get the launch penalized.

What if you don’t have an audience?

Be realistic. A maker with no list and no following usually won’t win the day against teams that arrive with thousands of supporters. That’s fine if you set the goal right:

  • Feedback from people who try new tools for a living.
  • A few real users who found you on the board.
  • A launch page you can link from your site.

If the one-day format doesn’t suit you, launch somewhere that doesn’t depend on a day-one crowd. Product Hunt alternatives for makers without an audience compares the options.

What should you do the day after?

  • Reply to every comment you missed.
  • Email the people who signed up, while they still remember you.
  • Write down what people asked about. Those questions are your next landing page edits.
  • Plan the next place to launch. One launch is rarely enough.

How does LaunchGP differ from Product Hunt?

Product Hunt LaunchGP
Length One day A full race week
Grid Every product launched that day 32 cars per Grand Prix
Free option Free to launch 20 free seats a round with the badge
Paid option None for ranking A front slot, P1 to P6, $59 down to $9; votes still set the order
After the race The launch page stays The podium keeps a dofollow link, every finisher joins Endurance

Many makers do both, a few weeks apart: one week on the LaunchGP grid and one day on Product Hunt.

FAQ

What time does Product Hunt reset?

The Product Hunt day runs midnight to midnight Pacific Time. Most makers go live at 12:01 a.m. PT.

Is it free to launch on Product Hunt?

Yes, posting a launch is free.

Can I launch on Product Hunt more than once?

A product can come back with a meaningful new version, but you can’t relaunch the same thing every week. Check Product Hunt’s current rules before planning a relaunch.

Should I ask people to upvote my Product Hunt launch?

Ask them to check it out and leave feedback instead. Product Hunt discourages direct upvote requests, and coordinated votes can be filtered.
