A product launch announcement is a short message that tells people a new product exists: what it does, who it’s for, and where to try it. A good one fits in five sentences and leads with the problem it solves, not with “We’re pleased to announce”. Write one core version, then adapt it for each place you post it: your site, email, social posts, launch directories and communities.

We run LaunchGP, a launch directory, so we read a lot of these. The most common problem: they talk about the company instead of the reader.

## What is a product launch announcement?

It’s the first public message about a new product. It can be a blog post, an email to your list, a social post, a listing on a launch site or a press release. The format changes; the job doesn’t. In a few seconds, a stranger should know:

1. What the product does
2. Who it’s for
3. Why it’s worth a look now
4. Where to try it

If a reader can’t answer those four after reading yours, rewrite it before you post.

## Why do most launch announcements get ignored?

Because they start with the company. “Acme is pleased to announce the launch of Acme Pro, a next-generation platform” tells a reader nothing they care about. Press release openings like that were written for journalists, and most launches today are read by people scrolling a feed or a directory.

The cost is concrete: you get one launch day per product. If the first line doesn’t say what the product does, people scroll past, and the launch you spent weeks preparing gets a handful of visits.

The second reason is that the announcement goes to one place, once. A post on your own blog with no audience behind it reaches almost nobody. The announcement has to travel to the places your users already are.

## How do you write a product launch announcement?

Write the core version first, in this order:

1. **The headline.** The product name plus what it does, in plain words. “Acme: invoices that chase late payments for you” beats “Introducing Acme”.
2. **The problem.** One sentence in your user’s words. “Freelancers spend hours every month chasing unpaid invoices.”
3. **What it does.** Two or three sentences on how the product fixes that problem. Name the one feature that matters most, not all of them.
4. **Who it’s for.** Be specific. “Freelance designers who send 5 to 20 invoices a month” is better than “businesses of all sizes”.
5. **The proof you have.** A screenshot, a short demo video or a real result from a beta user who agreed to be quoted. If you have none yet, show the product instead of describing it.
6. **The offer and the next step.** The price or the free plan, any launch-week deal with a real end date, and one link.

Keep it short. The core version should fit in one screen. The tagline is the hardest line, and [How to write a tagline for your product](https://launchgp.io/blog/how-to-write-a-product-tagline) walks through it.

## What should a launch announcement template look like?

Copy this and fill in the brackets:

> **[Product name]: [what it does in under 10 words]**
>
> [The problem, in one sentence your user would say.]
>
> [Product name] [does the main thing] so you can [the result]. [One sentence on how it works.]
>
> It’s built for [specific user]. [One line of proof: a screenshot, a demo, or a quote from a real user.]
>
> [Price or free plan.] [Launch offer and its end date, if you have one.]
>
> Try it here: [link]

## Where should you post your product launch announcement?

Each place wants a different length of the same message:

| Where | Length | What to change |
|---|---|---|
| Your site or blog | Full version, 300 to 800 words | Add screenshots, the story behind the product and an FAQ |
| Email to your list | 100 to 200 words | One link, a subject line that names the product. See [Product launch email](https://launchgp.io/blog/product-launch-email) |
| X, LinkedIn, Threads | One post or a short thread | Lead with the problem, attach a demo video or screenshot |
| Launch directories | Tagline plus a short description | Use the same copy everywhere so listings match |
| Communities (Hacker News, subreddits, Indie Hackers) | Plain, no marketing words | Follow each community’s rules. See [Show HN](https://launchgp.io/blog/show-hn) |
| Press release | 400 to 600 words | Only if you have news a journalist would cover |

Post the versions on the same day or within the same week, so people who see it twice recognize it. [How to write a launch post people actually read](https://launchgp.io/blog/how-to-write-a-launch-post) goes deeper on the community version.

## Do you need a press release to launch a product?

Usually not. A press release helps when a journalist or trade publication already covers your market and your launch is news for them: funding, a known founder, a first in the category. For an indie product, the people who’ll use it read directories, communities and social feeds, not newswires. Spend the effort there first.

If you write one anyway, keep the format but drop the “pleased to announce” opening. Put what the product does in the first sentence.

## How does LaunchGP fit into a launch announcement?

LaunchGP gives your announcement a launch week with a date. Each week runs as a Grand Prix: a grid of 32 cars, one per product, and people vote over the week. Twenty seats per round are free if you add the [LaunchGP badge](https://launchgp.io/badge) to your site. The front of the grid is for sale, from $59 for Pole Position down to $9 for P6. Money buys a grid slot, never points, so the order at the finish comes from votes.

Free cars get a dofollow link during their race week, the podium keeps a permanent one, and every finisher joins [Endurance](https://launchgp.io/endurance), a permanent race by class. Your announcement then has one more place to point people to, with a reason to come back and vote during the week.

## FAQ

### How long should a product launch announcement be?

The core version fits in one screen: a headline and five short paragraphs. Longer versions belong on your blog; shorter ones on social and directories.

### What should the first line of a launch announcement say?

What the product does and who it’s for. Skip “We’re excited to announce”. The reader cares about the problem you solve, not the date you shipped.

### When is the best time to announce a new product?

It depends on where you post it. Each platform has its own busy and quiet days. See [Best day to launch a product](https://launchgp.io/blog/best-day-to-launch-a-product).

### Should I announce before the product is ready?

You can announce a waitlist or a beta, as long as the announcement says so. Calling an unfinished product “live” costs you trust with the first people who try it. [Soft launch vs hard launch](https://launchgp.io/blog/soft-launch-vs-hard-launch) helps you choose.

### What if nobody responds to my announcement?

One post rarely carries a launch. Post the same message in several places in the same week, then follow up with the people who did reply. [How to get your first 100 users](https://launchgp.io/blog/how-to-get-your-first-100-users) covers what to do next.
